Report Day Instructions for Biology

Today, you will work on your part of the Operation Salsa Report for the Biology Symposium.

When you complete your part, you will print and submit your work, as well as email it to gabud.lchsn@gmail.com and operationsalsa@gmail.com. This project report is the culmination of a semester of hard work and will be showcased in a formal manner at the Biology Symposium on June 4, 2010.

Science Olympiad Presentation Brings Together Two All-Star Science Teachers

Macomb, MI–Don’t try this at home!

Science teachers Andrew Steinman and Gary Abud put on quite the science show for the Science Olympiad district competition on Saturday March 20, 2010.

Steinman and Abud, both 25, teach high school biology and chemistry, respectively. They combined their talents, creativity, and cunning science knowledge on a large-scale presentation fit for television. They created a show to demo several major ideas to young Science Olympiad students: light, glow-in-the-dark science, chemical reactions, and fire.

Over 300 participants in the day-long event engaged in Science Olympiad challenges with their teams and then attended the teachers’ science demo show at the end.

The demonstrations were spectacular and included a fire tornado, green flame explosion, juggling fire in hand, and breathing fire among others. The students, who all ranged from Kindergartners through grade five, were impressed with the “cool” things that could be done using science knowledge. Steinman and Abud explained the inner-workings of each demonstration as they worked through the hour-long presentation.

After the show concluded, participants in the competition received their awards and placings. Family and friends of the students entered in the event were on hand to support their student teams and also attend the show. As many individuals relayed, “this will be something the kids will remember for a long time to come.”

As we are approaching the middle of second semester, I think that having some helpful resources at your disposal may be of great use to you. Though we have gone over these resources before, I decided to make them known again, and this time all in one place!

Operation Salsa: Growing A Garden Without Soil

Biology students at LCN will be tackling a tough problem this semester. It will require a lot of attention and use of their biology knowledge.

Operation Salsa

is a Problem-Based-Learning challenge in which students will figure out how to grow a garden without the use of soil or conventional fertilizers. This semester-long project will require their consistent and regular attention, as well as their use of data tracking, as they develop practical skill and apply their biology learning to the real world. The problem will be solved when students successfully grow tomatoes and Jalapeños without using soil. The culmination of the project will be students making salsa from their own garden…hopefully!

Students are allowed to get a t-shirt, of any size and color, and write any notes they want on it. They may wear the shirt during the final exam. They must have their name on the sleeve, but they may write on the front or back. Though the shirt cannot be taken off during the exam until everyone is finished, they may turn the shirt around to see any notes on another part of the shirt. Only handwritten notes are allowed on the shirt. You may not tape or staple on notes to the shirt. Iron-on is a possibility, but it is not required. Some example information to put on the shirt could be: definitions of terms, example problems, formulas, diagrams, or notes.

The Mole…Not Just A Friendly Little Critter!

Hey there aspiring chemists, there is a concept in chemistry that is fundamental to the models of chemical systems. It deals with the quantity of particles present in a sample, and it utilizes a very special number called, AVOGADRO’S NUMBER. See if you can figure out what the mole is after viewing this thought experiment. You should find out at the end that the mole is really not as big of a deal as others make it out to be.

After viewing this presentation, you can now understand the tons of “mole” jokes there are out there intended for chemistry buffs. There is a national holiday dedicated to the mole. It is celebrated at 6:02am and 6:02pm on October 23rd every year. Each year the National Mole Day Foundation has a theme for the holiday.

Even moles enjoy guacamole!

Finally, if you haven’t had enough of the mole, you can get yourself over to Trader Joe’s to check out their delicious guacamole…aptly named for the famous Avogadro, whose name is synonymously associated with the mole.
